Paris: Chez H. Agasse, 1798-99
4to, pp 401-566,144; 1/4 leather, marbled boards, gilt tooling; G+ set; with 113 plates
Illustrated with half-title and printed title-page with one-hundred thirteen extraordinary engravings detailing 18th century surgery techniques, various methods of caring for an injury, the birthing process and the human body and numerous plates illustrating the instruments used, etc. Added is volume 2 of the Dictionnaire with the "Explication des Planches" in a fine matching binding. The first volumes of the Encyclopedie Methodique appeared in 1782-1792 and comprised of 166 volumes of text and fifty-one parts of plates. The idea originated with the publisher, Pankoucke (Charle-Joseph, q.v.) who took the opportunity from the success of Diderot's Encyclopedie to publish a "super-encyclopedia" taking large portions from Diderot's Encyclopedie with his permission. Each volume formed distinct dictionaries made up of various subjects and were entrusted to different e ditiors. The Chirurgie first appeared 1790-92 as a two volume set, which included four parts and was illustrated with one-hundred eleven plates, this edition with two more plates. Very little is known of the editors of the Chirurgie, Daniel Delaroch e (1743-1813) and Philippe Pettit-Radel (1749-1815) other than that they colloborated on what was considered a most unmanageable undertaking. A wonderful work.
