Filippo Buonanni (1638-1725) was a pupil of Athanasius Kircher and one of the most learned Jesuits of his time. In 1680 he succeeded Kircher as teacher of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum, and in 1698 he was appointed curator of the Museum Kircherianum at Rome. Buonanni made extensive observations in the natural sciences. He constructed his own microscope with three lenses, an ingenious mechanism for continual observation, which he also describes in the present "Micrographia". Against Francesco Redi a.o. he held to the believe, as Kircher had done, that spontaneous generation occurred in animals without a heart and without blood. Still, he made his own important contribution to science. His rational classification of shells was novel and useful, and the quality of his illustrations of various insects was excellent, as can be judged from the present work. The "Micrographia", which contains also some interesting observations on early microscopes, was republished in 1709 in the "Musaeum Kircherianum".

First edition of the German answer to Hooke's Micrographia, and the first German book to be devoted entirely to the microscope, combining detailed descriptions with intricate illustrations. Griendel's design of the microscope, as described and illustrated in detail in his work, was a distinct improvement on Hooke's and Leeuwenhoeck's instruments, as the object could be viewed at a greater distance from the lens, thereby greatly increasing the field of vision. His instrument is of great interest 'as being the first instrument in which there was an attempt made to improve the objective; for in this microscope the objective consists of two plano-convex lenses mounted with their curved surfaces facing one another. This construction was not copied by any other maker and for the next hundred years the objective was universally made of a single lense, usually bi-convex' (Clay &Court p. 84)

Beginning in 1716, he devoted most of his career to exposing the wonders of the microscopic world. Although not published until 1754, the illustrations and text for his "Observations on Natural History Made with the Microscope" were completed thirty-six years earlier. ["What Eyes Would Be.." Microscopes from the Leidy Microscopical Society and related books from the Ewell Sale Stewart Library] "The publication of the 'Descriptions' established Joblot as the first French microscopist. The first part of the book described several microscopes and their construction and introduced some improvements.. the second part discusses Joblot's microscopical observations.. (which) mainly concern Protozoa. Leeuwenhoek had observed the Protozoa previously, but Joblot's is the earliest treatise on them."

'Arcana naturae' contains letters 32-33, 37, 39-41, 61-92 and 'Continuatio Arcanorum' letters 93-107. Leeuwenhoek published 165 letters numbered 28-146 and I-XLVI, the first 27 were not published. The first 80 letters are in this volume! "Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek's letters, sent to the Royal Society of London or to its secretary Robert Hooke, were written in Dutch, and their first printing, from 1673 on, in the Philosophical Transactions, was in translation and in an abridged form. In 1684 the first letters in unabridged form were published in the Dutch. The Latin edition started 1685. The impact of the Latin edition of these letters was enormous as finally the scientific community could read about Leeuwenhoek's observations with his microscope." (DSB)

Dr. King especially obtained the services of Ferdinand Zirkel, "The World's leading authority...on the science of microscopic petrography" to study and report on the hundred of specimens collected on his survey during their exploration. The result is the present work "accompanied by 12 remarkably good color plates which 'sold' petrography to the American scientist."
