S02-021. English, 1st quarter 19th century, signed on the eyepiece draw tube "WATKINS, Charing Cross LONDON." Made of polished mahogany with brass fittings and standing 20 3/4" high on its folding 3-leg brass table stand base. The polished mahogany telescope barrel is 33" long, tapered from 2 1/2" down to 2" in diameter, with an eyepiece draw tube 1 1/2" diameter x 16" long. The air spaced achromatic doublet objective is 2" in diameter, and together with its 4-element eyepiece, yields clear erect images. The telescope is in fine overall condition, although the brass fittings have retained very little of their original lacquer finish. The original fitted case, 39" long x 9" deep x 5 1/4" high is in fair overall condition, showing extensive exterior wear.
