LARGE BOX-MOUNTED COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

01-006. Probably English, mid 19th century, unsigned. Made of polished lacquered brass and standing 22" high overall, mounted in the top of the 9 3/4" x 12 3/4" x 5 1/8" hand dovetailed fitted mahogany case. The body tube is 9 1/8" long x 1 1/4" diameter and screws into an arm at the top of the heavy rectangular column; the column has a compass joint at the bottom to incline the microscope for use and a large threaded fitting to screw the column into a brass plate in the top of the box; the 3 3/8" wide x 2 1/2" deep stage focuses by pinion drive on a rack cut into the back of the column; the stage has a ring of aperture stops mounted with a hinge on the bottom side; and the 1 1/2" diameter double sided mirror is mounted on an adjustable bracket below the stage. The original accessories include 1 eyepiece, 3 small objectives, Bonnani-type spring stage, brass stage disk, and a special mounting wrench. There is a dovetailed slot on the side of the stage, probably for a bull's eye condensing lens, but it is not present. The microscope, its accessories, and the mahogany case are all in very good overall condition.
