ADVANCED STUDENT'S PETROLOGICAL MICROSCOPE by JAMES SWIFT & SON
01-014. English, ca 1900, signed on the base "J. SWIFT & SON, LONDON" and "ADVANCED STUDENT'S" on the backpiece. Brass construction with black enameled base & limb and lacquered brass body tube, focussing knobs, mirror housing, and various fittings; 13 3/8" tall (min) extending to 16 1/2" by rack & pinion coarse focussing: and graduated fine focus knob acting on a screw within the spring loaded back post. The 4 1/2" diameter glass-faced rotating stage has a graduated outer ring with vernier readout, a collar for the substage condenser, and a swing-away bracket for the substage polarizer. The microscope body tube is fitted with a slide-out Nicol prism and a focussable Bertrand lens. The original accessories include two eyepieces, 2 objectives in brass canisters, one condenser insert, double nosepiece, and bull's eye condensing lens on a table stand. The microscope and its accessories are in fine overall condition, with original finish throughout, all in their original 6" x 9" x 15 1/4" fitted mahogany case.
