01-028. American, 2nd quarter 20th century, stamped "EBERBACH, ANN ARBOR." Made of machined steel & black enameled brass, 8" long overall, with five graduated spindles arranged in a series along a common axis. Rotation of each spindle produces a horizontal displacement of the stage, which swivels on a vertical axis, thus allowing a traverse along any linear direction of a thin section. This uncommon recording micrometer stage is in very fine overall condition and is complete with its original mounting wrench in its original cardboard box, showing very little evidence of use. See pages 64-65 in Dan Kile's "The Petrographic Microscope - Evolution of a Mineragical Research Instrument" for a photo of a similar stage, along with a discussion of its history and operating principles.
