PULLEY & CORD TELLURIAN by NEWTON & SON
03-008. English, mid 19th century, signed on the base "Published by NEWTON & SON, 66 Chancery Lane & 3
Fleet Street, Temple Bar, LONDON." The 13" diameter oak base plate is varnished, with outer
hand-colored engraved zodiac, compass & calendar scales, and inner engraved stippled cloud effects.
The earth & moon operate on a separate brass pulley & cord system, where two pulleys keep the
direction of the earth's axis constant, a second pair of pulleys drives the moon around the earth,
and a third pair ensures the retrogression of nodes. The earth is represented by a 1 1/4" diameter
globe; the 1 7/8" diameter gilt brass sun ball sits atop the axis; and the base is mounted on 3
short turned legs. All parts of this beautiful tellurian are original, with most of the original
lacquer finish on the brass parts; it is also in fine working order. The original 14 3/8" x 14 1/4"
x 12" black painted pine carrying case is in good usable condition.
