SHAFT-DRIVE TELLURIAN by SVANSTROM & RYLANDER
03-010. Swedish, late 4th quarter 19th century, signed on the base, "SVANSTROM & RYLANDER, STOCKHOLM."
The tellurian stands 17" high overall on a black painted cast iron pedestal. The earth & moon sit
atop a round gearbox at the end of the 13 3/4" long arm and are rotated by a crank attached to a
shaft which runs inside the arm. The earth is an attractive 4 5/8" diameter terrestrial globe,
signed "ERNST SCHOTTE & Co., BERLIN," attached to its gearing mechanism which slips into the
gearbox; the moon is a 1" diameter white-painted wood ball attached to its gearing mechanism which
is mounted atop the globe. The sun is represented by a candle in a polished brass holder. This
elaborate mechanical planetary model is in good overall condition and all gearing works smoothly,
however the parabolic reflector behind the candle has been lost. A very attractive and unusual
tellurian.
