PARKES AND HADLEY'S PATENT ORRERY
by
GEORGE PHILIP & SON

03-013. English, early 1st quarter 20th century, signed on the central disk "PARKES AND HADLEY'S PATENT ORRERY" and "GEORGE PHILIP & SON, LONDON" on a metal label on the base. The apparatus consists of a 9 3/4" diameter toothed brass plated cast iron disk mounted on a 5 1/8" diameter brass plated cast iron pedestal, with an elaborate gear mechanism riding around on the teeth of the disk to generate the motions of the earth and moon. The disk is labeled on the top with the seasons and the months of the year; the sun is represented by a small brass spirit lamp with a glass chimney, the earth by a 3" diameter globe, and the moon by a 1/2" diameter brass ball on a spring metal arm. The tellurian is in very good overall condition, and all gearing works smoothly.
