LAING'S PLANETARIUM

03-014. Canadian, patent dated 1896, and signed on the manufacturer's name plate "LAING'S PLANETARIUM, PAT'D AUG. 27, 1896. PAT'D U.S. MAR. 2, 1897. A. LAING, ESSEX, ONT." and on the globe "AMERICAN GLOBE AND SCHOOL SUPPLY CO." The planetarium stands 12 3/4" high overall on its turned mahogany base, and the mahogany arm is 13 1/2" long overall. The Earth is an attractive 3" diameter terrestrial globe; the moon and Venus are painted wood balls; and the sun is a 4 1/2" diameter gilt wood ball. The planetarium arm is moved around the sun using the post underneath the arm to show the rotation and revolution of the Earth; solar and lunar eclipses; phases of the moon; reasons for seasonal changes; areas of day and night; signs of the zodiac; and other Earth, sun, moon and Venus relationships. The planetarium motions are accomplished with 9 pairs of wood pulleys, plus 3 pairs of rollers used to incline the axes of the Earth and Venus. This rare and beautiful Canadian planetarium is in fine overall condition and all pulley motions work smoothly.
