2 3/4" LACQUERED BRASS BOX SEXTANT by TROUGHTON & SIMMS
S05-001. English, 3rd quarter 20th century, signed in script, "Troughton & Simms, London". Made of bright lacquered brass, 2 3/4" diameter x 1 1/2" thick (closed), with 1 5/8" radius inlet silver scale & vernier, swing-away magnifier, rack & pinion index setting, calibrating tool, 2 internal filters, and clear peep sight. The cover unscrews and screws into the other side to act as a handle. These compact sextants were originally designed for nautical use, but were rapidly adopted for use by land surveyors. This small box sextant is in very good overall condition.
