06-041. American, mid 19th century, unsigned. The original 8 3/8" x 4 1/2" x 2 1/8" black painted hinged tin carrying case has a gold eagle painted on the top; the interior is also painted black and has a compartment for the 2 weights (1 troy ounce & 1/2 troy ounce). The steel beam is 7" long overall, with 3 5/8" diameter brass pans suspended by the original brass chains. This attractive hand balance is in very good overall condition; the tin case is also in very good overall condition, including the hinges, noting expected wear to the paint.
