06-044. American, 4th quarter 19th century, signed in script on the silvered compass face, "W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y." and "G.S. Woolman, Agent, New York." Made of polished lacquered brass, the compass has a 4 7/8" long edge-bar needle with a jeweled pivot, mounted inside a 5 7/8" diameter housing with adjustable rotation and vernier readout. The compass is mounted on an 15 3/8" long x 5mm thick brass base plate, with 7 3/4" high detachable sight vanes, crossed bubble levels, chain counter, needle lifter on the underside, and heavy brass compass cover. The compass is complete, all original, and in very good overall condition, with much of its original lacquer finish, missing only the detachable brass ball & socket staff base. The original 16 1/4" x 7 1/2" x 4 1/2" hand dovetailed fitted mahogany case is also in very good overall condition.
