by
GRIFFIN

07-025. English, early 1st quarter 20th century, and signed on the beam "GRIFFIN LONDON. W.C." The 20 3/4" x 1/2" beam is made of lacquered brass, the short end with notches to hold the counterweight and the long end calibrated from 0 - 18" in 1/10" increments. The 6 1/8" tall lacquered brass supports screw into 2 3/8" diameter lacquered brass bases and the 2 1/2" diameter lead counterweight is mounted between lacquered brass disks. The balance is complete and in very good overall condition. The original 21 7/8" x 4 5/8" x 1 7/8" fitted mahogany case is in good overall condition, with a small label of instructions in the lid. The Walker specific gravity balance is designed to be a field-usable apparatus for determining the specific gravity of a rock sample. The rock sample is tied with thread and suspended from the beam and weighed in and out of a small vessel filled with water.
