EARLY CURTA TYPE I
MECHANICAL CALCULATOR
No. 4483

09-035. Liechtenstein, 1948-9, serial numbered 4483. This compact calculator stands 4 1/4" high overall x 2 1/8" diameter and fits comfortably in the palm of the hand. With 8 entry digits and 17 readout registers, the Curta is essentially a pocket version of the large table model calculators used until the development of the Hewlett Packard pocket electronic calculators. This miniature mechanical calculator is in very good working condition, with its original black metal dust and shock proof carrying case; it is an example of the very earliest Curta Type I calculators, with round pins to set the entry digits (instead of the later short bars) and the top unscrews counterclockwise (instead of the later clockwise). These unusual features are only seen on Curta Type I calculators with serial numbers under approximately 5000 (only about 35 of these early models are recorded on the serial numbered "List of Curtas" on the internet.)
