S10-055. English, early 1st quarter 20th century, unsigned, but similar to one shown on page 132 of the XIVth Edition of John J. Griffin & Sons, Ltd. catalog of "Scientific Handicraft - Part I." The apparatus consists of a 5" tall black painted brass arm mounted atop a 51/2" x 4" x 3/4" polished mahogany base and holding a 21/8" diameter spiral wire, with the axle of a 3" diameter polished lacquered brass gyroscope wheel in contact with the spiral wire and the wheel rotating on 1" tall bearing underneath it. This interesting demonstration apparatus is in very good working condition. When the gyroscope wheel is spun, it will follow the convolutions of the spiral wire, inside and outside. In the Griffin catalog, it is sold with 4 different wire patterns; however, only the spiral wire is present here.
