by
JACOB H. GEMRIG

15-020. American, early 3rd quarter 19th century, signed "GEMRIG, PHILA." Originally designed by Dr. Hugh L. Hodge and described in his 1864 book "The Principles and Practice of Obstetrics," where many of Gemrig's other obstetrical instruments were also described. Made of unplated steel, 16 1/2" long overall, with ovoid blades, parallel shanks, increased pelvic curve, and a Siebold's lock. These forceps are in very good overall condition, with typical surface corrosion. See page 49 in James M. Edmonson's "American Surgical Instruments" for two photos of identical forceps from the collection of the Dittrick Museum of Medical History in Cleveland, Ohio.
