LABORATORY DEMONSTRATION THERMOPILES

19-011A. LACQUERED BRASS DOUBLE-SIDED THERMOPILE ON TABLE STAND
Probably English, 4th quarter 19th century, unsigned. Made of polished lacquered brass and standing 11 1/8" tall (min) on its fully adjustable brass table stand. On each end is a removable 3 1/8" diameter (max) x 5" long tapered horn to collect radiant heat. At the base of the inside of each horn is a square array of bismuth antimony detectors, which give a relative large change in output voltage for a relatively small rise in temperature. The two electrodes which are connected to the detector arrays are mounted on either side of the middle of the apparatus. The apparatus is in very good display condition, with much of the original lacquer finish on the horns; however the detector arrays and their electrical connectivity have not been tested. This interesting thermopile was designed for classroom demonstrations involving the collection of radiant heat and temperature measurement.
