Details

06-036. Possibly American, early 1st quarter 20th century, unsigned. Made of polished brass, 9 3/4" tall overall, with1 3/4" long taper for mounting in a transit base, 2 1/4" long x 3/8" diameter crossed bubble levels mounted just above the taper, and the 4 1/2" long x 2" diameter oil lamp with a threaded lid mounted on top. The lamps are both in very good overall condition (one has been cleaned and the other has not), in their original very worn wood box. See page 33 in Edward Durham's "Mine Surveying" (1913) for a b&w photo of a similar pair of lamps by W. & L.E. Gurley (although, they are not listed in any Gurley catalog that we have ever seen.)
