S05-008. English, epoch 1955, signed "STAR GLOBE, KELVIN & HUGHES LTD, EPOCH 1955." The 7 1/2" diameter globe is mounted in a brass meridian circle on steel pins which represent the polar axis. The circle is divided from 0-90 degrees in four quadrants, the zeros being at the pins or poles. The meridian circle is held in place with regard to the horizontal circle by two slots in which it can be turned for the purpose of adjusting the latitude. The horizon circle in which the meridian circle is mounted is supported on a platform in the box, and also carries four vertical quadrants mounted on a horizontal circle. The quadrants are divided from 0-90 degrees to show altitude, and divided edges are used as index marks by which to read the azimuth dividing on the main horizontal circle. Also included are two small brass cursors which could be mounted and slide on the altitude quadrants. This system of vertical arcs can be lifted off for convenience in adjusting the globe. The apparatus is in very good overall condition, showing some wear on the globe inside the cartouche. The original 10 1/2" square x 10 1/4" fitted mahogany case is also in very good overall condition, with "Instructions for Use of Star Globe" inside the lid.
