WAVE MOTION DEMONSTRATION APPARATUS by W & J GEORGE
S10-078. English, 1st half 20th century, signed on a brass name plate on the base "W. & J. GEORGE, Gt CHARLES STREET, BIRMINGHAM, 3" and "F. E. BECKER & CO., HATTON WALL, LONDON, E.C.1." Made of a combination of brass and steel and standing 14 3/4" high overall on its 8' x 5" x 5/8" black lacquered heavy cast iron base. Thirty 2" diameter polished brass cams are mounted on a steel shaft with a crank handle below a 5 1/2" wide x 5 1/4" tall polished brass frame with 2 cross-bars. Each of the cross-bars has 30 holes corresponding to the 30 cams; through 20 of the holes, 4 15/16" long steel rods with small balls on top ride on the cams; through the other 10 holes, bent steel rods ride on the cams and are supported in a 10" long black lacquered brass slotted bar mounted on the side of the frame. When the handle is turned, the 20 vertical steel rods demonstrate sinusoidal wave motion and the 10 bent rods demonstrate longitudinal wave motion. This very unusual demonstration apparatus is in very good working condition.
