06-007. American, late 2nd quarter 19th century, signed in script on the silvered compass face, "Benjn. Pike & Sons, New York." Made of polished lacquered brass, the compass has a 5 3/4" long edge-bar needle with a jeweled pivot, mounted inside a 6 3/4" diameter housing. The compass is mounted on an 15 3/8" long x 4mm thick brass base plate, with 6 1/2" high detachable sight vanes, 2 3/4" long crossed bubble levels, needle lifter on the underside, and a simple 5 1/2" long ball & socket staff base. The compass is complete, all original, and in very good overall condition, with much of its original finish. The original 15 3/8" x 8" x 3" hand dovetailed fitted mahogany case is also in very good overall condition, except for an old chip off one corner.
